However, Emily Hannah Stausboll, shipping analyst at BIMCO, the major international shipping association, says that often overly optimistic forecasts by Egyptian officials over the past week have left many shipowners confused.

However, when there is no faster and cheaper option available, the Suez Canal will remain a vital lifeblood for transport operators.

The first ship to pass through after the opening of the Suez Canal was YM Wish, a Hong Kong-flagged container ship more than 360 meters long leaving the canal at around 9:15 a.m.
